2016 Onslow Angus On Property Bull Sale results

Onslow Angus top at $20,000

Strong demand for Angus bulls with correct conformation and proven performance was evident at the annual on-property sale for the Onslow Angus stud, Wallendbeen, on account of Doug and Barbara Tozer.

Repeat buyers were the feature of the sale, with top price at $20,000 paid by Rosedale Rural Pty Ltd, Campbelltown, Tasmania, for Onslow Exacto L144, an April 2015 drop son of Granite Ridge 4D7, weighing 878kg.

The “eye catching” young sire was described by breeder Doug Tozer, as a “very interesting bull, with growth and muscle.”

Of the 61 bulls offered, 56 sold for the highly commendable average of $9754.

Significant buyers included Lismore Pastoral Co, Cootamundra who paid to $13,500 for a son of Granite Ridge 4D7 in their draft of four which averaged $8,125, Hanworth Station, Taralga, who bought a son of Ardrossan Apollo for $14,500 and Kinlock Grazing Co, Launceston, Tas, who paid $13,500 for son of Granite Ridge Regent.

E.J. Merriman and Son, “Humewood”, Yass selected a new sire for $13,000 while Ventorria Pty Ltd, purchased a $13,500 son of Granite Ridge 4D7, and Merricroft Pastoral Co, Golspie, paid $15,000 and $8,000 for their two sires.

Repeat client Ian Darmody, Goulburn paid $15,500 for the top bull in his draft, and outlayed $9,000 for a second pick, while A and M Tarlinton, Cobargo, paid $13,000 for their selection.

Bannaby Angus, Taralga, paid $12,000 for their pick of the offering and BJ and LK Tozer, “Starwood”, Jerangle, purchased two bulls for average price $11,500.

Among the volume buyers, Rossgole Pastoral Co, Scone, purchased five sires to top of $11,000 and average price of $9,400, and Steve Ridley, Elders, Goulburn paid $10,000 average for the four bulls he selected for his client WKW Holdings Pty Ltd.

Families with long association with Onslow Angus included NV and SM Heggaton, Wallendbeen who paid top of $16,000 for their draft of three which averaged $12,500.

Speaking after the sale, studmaster Doug Tozer expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the support shown he and Barbara through the years while they bred the type of cattle which performed under all conditions and met current market conditions.

“It is very pleasing for me to breed good cattle, but there is even more pleasure knowing they are also appreciated by good cattlemen,” Mr Tozer said.

“I know these cattle will put on weight, produce a carcase which will yield and they will marble.”

The on-property sale was conducted by Elders Studstock, with Andy McGeoch on the rostrum.

Angus bulls sold to high of $16,000 at the Onslow

Stud principals Doug and Barbara Tozer returned to the auction arena after five years selling bulls privately and via Helmsman to achieve a top of $16,000 and average $6897. The sale was met with strong support from clients, with 44 of 55 selling under the hammer, before clearing a further seven after the auction for $4000 each. The auction may have been put on hold for five years, but the return could not have been any more the same, with the gallery of buyers, close to that of the last sale in 2010.

The top bull sold to long time supporter of the Onslow program, Ferdie Foster, “Rosedale”, Campbelltown, Tasmania, for $16,000 via a phone bid to Elders studstock agent Josh Crosby.

The lot was Onslow Formidabull K39, a son of Banquet Formidabull F485, with a +125 for 600 day growth and +2.7 eye muscle area.
Mr Foster runs 1400 breeders, with different marketing options for his cattle, selling yearlings to the abattoirs, steers to feedlots if the price was right, store markets and he sells a lot of breeding females.
Kinlock Angus, “Kinloch”, Perth, Tasmania, paid $11,000 for Onslow Equator J315 – a son of KO A241 Equator – with a moderate birth of +4.7, +122 600 day growth, +2.9 EMA and +2.1 IMF.

TM Consulting Pty Ltd, “Hanworth Station”, Taralga, paid $8000 and $9000 for two new sires while Snowview Pastoral Company, Tumbarumba, paid $9000 for the first bull of the day a 970-kilogram Onslow Equator J316, with moderate growth and carcase, coupled with 46 centimetre scrotal.

Frank Bragg, “Rossgole”, Aberdeen, set a strong pace for the sale buying seven of the top sires which averaged $6286, while return buyers SM and NE Heggarton, “Bramshot”, Wallendbeen paid $6000 for a new sire.

The Heggartons regularly top the annual Gundagai weaner sale with steers by the Onslow bulls.

Gunninguldrie Pastoral Company, “Gunninguldrie Station”, Lake Cargelligo, paid $7000 and $6500 for two young sires with good growth and strong EMA data.
Jeremiah Pastoral Company, Tumut, paid to $6000 for four bulls, averaging $5500, while J and A McDonnell, Tumbarumba, paid $10,500 for 780kg Onslow Exacto K11, with strong growth and carcase data for an 18-month-old sire.
Rounding out the sale the Reynolds family, Twyzel Pastoral Company, “Twyzel”, Lake Bathurst, paid $7500 and $500 for two bulls, while Milson Family Partnership, Goulburn, loaded two top end bulls at $9000 each and IC and P Crawford, Goulburn, bought two for an average of $8500.
